Comparative Study of Yield and Water Productivity of Maize under Automated Drip and Flood Irrigation
Mujahid Ali, Asif Iqbal, Muhammad Mohsan, Habib ur Rehman, Hafiz Muhammad Bilal, Tahir Mehmood, Haseeb Ahsan, Imran Ahmad, Muhammad Aasim Rafiq
This study compares maize yield and crop water productivity under automated drip irrigation (ADI) and flood irrigation (FI) in Pakistan. Conducted over two consecutive Kharif seasons (2022 and 2023) at the Water Management Research Farm, Renala Khurd, Okara, the experiment showed that ADI applied 329 mm of water compared to 550 mm in FI. Yield was higher under ADI (2.60 tons/acre) than FI (2.40 tons/acre), with crop water productivity significantly greater in ADI (1.95 Kg/m³ vs. 1.08 Kg/m³). ADI also improved oil and protein content in maize grains, demonstrating its effectiveness in conserving water and enhancing crop quality.
